Tips for exploring WNC
We love being able to share our favorite hikes and outdoor activities with our guests!
While the mountains are beautiful, We encourage our guests to please keep in mind that the wilderness is WILD. Please do not approach wildlife. Practice Leave No Trace – Do not litter and leave rocks, plants, and animals where you found them. Please respect the lakes, streams, and rivers– they are the life source of this beautiful land.
If you see trash- even if it’s not yours, please pick it up within reason – Every little bit counts.
Most importantly, as you head up to higher elevations, we encourage you to pack for changing weather and plan smart.
How to prepare for your WNC adventures:
1. Always have an extra clothing layer or two
It will always be much cooler at higher elevations. Snow and ice are possibilities from October – May.
2. Bring a raincoat or poncho
Rain is inevitable around here and it can seemingly come out of nowhere.
3. Wear appropriate footwear
You’ll regret hiking even the shortest trails in sandals. Protect your toes and ankles from rocks and other objects by wearing hiking boots or trail shoes. Trust us, there is nothing worse than blisters or a stumped toe on the trail. And if you’re an experienced hiker- bring ice spikes during cooler months just in case. Black Balsam Outdoors downtown can outfit you with whatever hiking gear you need.
4. Pack plenty of water and snacks
Fuel and hydrate on the trail. It can be easy to forget to hydrate when you’re having fun. Snacks are your reward for making it all the way to the summit!
5. Make sure your vehicle has plenty of fuel
There are no gas or concessions on Blue Ridge Parkway or in national forests.
6. Download maps of roads and trails while on wifi
You’re likely to lose cell service while exploring.
7. Check the weather frequently
The weather changes quickly in the mountains so it’s best to look at the radar for the whole surrounding area (not just the local forecast). There is always a chance of rain around, here, so don’t let that keep you from going out.
And when in doubt, just look up at the clouds and try to make smart decisions. We want you to enjoy every second you’re here- safely.
